Family Polychrotidae, Genus: Anolis
These lizards are distinguished from other lizards by the peculiar extension of the skin on the throat of the males, that often sports spectacular colors. These appendages are displayed to attract females, but also in territorial display, or as a defense against predators. There is a high diversity of Anolis lizards in Ecuador, where they are found from sea level to 2,500 metres altitude, and are abundant along the Ecoroute. At present, they are being seriously affected by local climate change, with among other things, a reduction in the number of rainy days.
